While visiting Ronnie in the hospital last Sunday she reminded me of an incident that happened 52 years ago while I was in the Navy in Vietnam. She had mailed me a package of some great snacks and also a few small bottles of whiskey (the kind you get on an airplane). When the mail was delivered to us it came out by helicopter and upon dropping the mailbags the bag containing my gift broke open and so did my package. The small liquor bottles scattered all over and ultimately got picked up by the ship's postal personnel and confiscated. They released the snacks to me but not the liquor. I never found out what happened to those little bottles.
Anyway, I thought I was going to be in trouble, but nothing happened. So, for a week after this happened I worried until we returned to our base in the Philippines and I had a chance to call Ronnie. She told me the FBI had already visited her and all they did was just warn her not to send contraband to a US Navy ship. We laugh about this now, but it was a little scary when it was going on. She continued to send me packages, but now they were "dry".
